Shenandoah National Park has four primary entrances, each providing access to Skyline Drive, the park’s scenic byway.

1. Front Royal Entrance (North Entrance)

  • Notes: This is the northernmost entrance, offering access to the northern section of Skyline Drive.

2. Thornton Gap Entrance (Central Entrance)

  • Location: Intersection of U.S. Route 211 and Skyline Drive near Luray, Virginia.
  • Mile Marker: Skyline Drive Mile 31.5
  • Features: The closest entrance to the town of Luray, Virginia, and Luray Caverns.
  • Notes: Centrally located, this entrance provides access to many popular trails and viewpoints.

3. Swift Run Gap Entrance (Central Entrance)

  • Location: Intersection of U.S. Route 33 and Skyline Drive near Elkton, Virginia.
  • Mile Marker: Skyline Drive Mile 65.5
  • Features: Provides access to the central portion of the park and the popular Big Meadows area.
  • Notes: Another central entrance, convenient for exploring the middle part of the park.

4. Rockfish Gap Entrance (South Entrance)

  • Location: Intersection of Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 250 near Waynesboro, Virginia.
  • Mile Marker: Skyline Drive Mile 105 (the end of Skyline Drive)
  • Features: Connects directly to the Blue Ridge Parkway, offering the opportunity to continue your scenic drive south.
  • Notes: The southernmost entrance, providing access to the southern section of Skyline Drive.

Driving along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park is a memorable experience, but it’s important to be prepared and follow some key guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Here are some important notes when you drive along Skyline Drive:

  • Speed Limit: The speed limit on Skyline Drive is 35 mph. This helps protect wildlife and enhances safety on the winding mountain road.
  • Watch for Wildlife: Deer, bears, and other animals frequently cross the road. Drive cautiously, especially during dawn and dusk when animals are most active.
  • Pull Over Safely: Use designated overlooks and pullouts to stop for photos, admire the views, or let faster traffic pass.
  • Stay Alert: The road can be narrow and winding with blind curves. Stay focused and avoid distractions.
  • Check Road Conditions: Weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Check for road closures or hazardous conditions before you go, especially in winter.

Shenandoah National Park Entrances Fee

Standard Entrance Pass

  • Private Vehicle (Non-commercial): $30 for a 7-day pass. This pass covers all occupants of the vehicle.
  • Motorcycle: $25 for a 7-day pass.
  • Per Person (Pedestrian, Bicyclist): $15 for a 7-day pass.

Annual Passes

  • Shenandoah National Park Annual Pass: $55. This pass is valid for one year from the month of purchase and covers the pass holder and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle.

Additional Information

  • Commercial Vehicles: Fees vary based on vehicle capacity.
  • Interagency Annual Pass: $80. This pass grants access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites, including all national parks.
